Symbols Learning Vancouver is a one-to-one tutoring centre on West Broadway specializing in students with learning difficulties and differences. It provides multisensory tutoring in math, reading and writing for students from pre-K through Grade 12, with particular support for students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism, processing difficulties and related learning needs. A formal diagnosis is not required.
Math tutoring uses a multisensory Orton-Gillingham-based approach and focuses on foundational numeracy skills such as place value, sequencing, mental math, fact recall, computation and understanding math language and word problems. Students begin with an intake assessment so instruction can be individualized to their current strengths and gaps, and tutoring is available both in person at the Vancouver centre and online. Programs run year-round, including summer.
Teaching approach: Symbols uses individualized, systematic and multisensory instruction based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. Lessons combine visual, auditory, tactile and movement-based learning. Math tutoring begins with an intake assessment of foundational skills and then follows a sequential plan based on the student's strengths, gaps and progress. Tutors continually adjust lesson plans based on how the student responds and may pre-teach current classroom concepts once foundational skills are stable.
